Zeeland is the most authentic coastal province in the Netherlands, with no village more than 17 km from the sea or a former estuary. Schouwen-Duiveland, the most northerly of Zeeland’s many islands, is known as the 'the jewel in the crown of Zeeland'. Visit the famous storm surge barrier on the Eastern Scheldt, stroll through Zeeland’s largest area of woodland or travel on the unique cycle paths along the beach and dunes, by bicycle.
Authentic local folklore in Schouwen
The straôrieen is a spring festival that dates back to the mid-19th century. In the run-up to Easter, the horses were released from their stable to work the land, but before being put to work, the ‘evil spirits’ (mud fever, mange and other leg disorders) were chased away by the healing effects of salt water. New traditions have recently emerged within Straô, but one thing that remains practically the same in every village are the stroosel biscuits served with hot chocolate. The parade is joined by the local marching band that accompanies the riders to the village ring, where competitions of tilting at the ring are held.

AUGUST: LATE SUMMER FESTIVAL
Theatre and dance performances at unexpected locations
The Zeeland Late Summer Festival has brought together theatre and dance performances at unexpected open air locations and in eye-catching buildings throughout Zeeland, since 2001. The heart of the festival is the Abbey in Middelburg, where a wide range of performing arts and music events are held. It is a place where people come together to picnic and join in song; a period of laughter, dancing and social interaction. At least three performances are produced specially for the festival locations and are only performed in Zeeland.
SEPTEMBER: FILM BY THE SEA
More than just a film festival
Film by the Sea is more than just a festival of film and literature: as well as various premieres, it also features less mainstream cinema. The festival screens around 100 films specially imported from all over the world, for one-off presentation during the festival; there is an extensive education programme with a variety of film-related courses and opportunities for the general public and guests to meet, during daily talk shows.
